Hi! I'm Sonya, and I currently attend Harvard (Class of 2030). I entered the college admissions process with no hooks (no athlete, legacy, feeder school, or first gen) and an intended major of mechanical engineering, and I got into Harvard University, Georgia Tech, Carnegie Mellon, University of Michigan, University of Florida, and UC San Diego, among others. If the college admissions process taught me anything, it's that your story makes or breaks your application, and also that you won't nail it the first time you write your essays. My biggest strength is helping students develop their confidence and story, and helping them find connections between their story/activities and college-specific essays. One unique thing about me was that I didn't have incredible research or summer programs, and no external college counseling. However, I had a lot of STEM clubs, community service, and competitions, and I found a way to tie these into a story, and to connect them to each of my why-us/why-major essays. I've spent this summer advising multiple rising seniors, and I've found that once we set up their story, everything else becomes much easier. Feel free to reach out with inquiries. The college admissions process is, to put it simply, stressful, and it doesn't help when you start comparing yourself to those around you. People treat it like you need hooks, research, fine arts, summer programs, or internships, or else you're cooked. I didn't have any of these. Instead, I had deep participation in clubs and interests, awards, community service, and a strong story. I'm proof that it really is possible to get in without having everything. I coach for the students who are like me: unsure, yet determined and hard working.

Three words: trial and error. Your personal statement? Trial and error (I rewrote mine at least 10 times!) Your story? Also trial and error. Everyone tells you to start early because you truly do need time to experiment, rethink, and rewrite. As a coach, my main goal is to help you streamline the process of trial and error, especially with your story and essay. The most valuable thing you can do is develop your story: how your activities tie into your major, what values you want to communicate, what you can take from and bring to a college, etc. From there, your essays, personal statement, and awards/activities follow naturally.
